LHS boys fall against SM South on last-second shot

Lawrence High's Kobe Buffalomeat shoots a jumper against Shawnee Mission South Friday.

? As soon as Clarence King’s half-court heave fell short of the rim, Shawnee Mission South’s student section rushed the court and the celebration was on.

Lawrence High’s boys basketball team led by seven points with 2:15 remaining but turned the ball over on three straight possessions. That opened the door for the Raiders and they took full advantage.

SM South senior guard Isaac Soares scored the game-winning bucket with three seconds left, handing the Lions a painful 61-60 loss at SM South — their first defeat in Sunflower League play this season.

Several minutes after the King’s half-court prayer went unanswered, the Lions streamed out of the visiting locker room in silence.

“We dug in and really gave ourselves chances,” Lawrence coach Mike Lewis said. “We just weren’t good enough to win.”

Lawrence senior guard Austin Miller, all 5-foot-7 of him, did his best to carry the Lions to victory. With the Lions down by two points in the final minute, Miller drilled a go-ahead 3-pointer from nearly 30 feet away.

It wasn’t the typical play that’s drawn up, but his teammates have plenty of confidence in Miller when he’s doing his best Steph Curry impersonation.

“He does that all the time in practice,” LHS sophomore Brett Chapple said, “and he hits them all of the time.”

Miller added: “I was not thinking about that one. That one just came off nice.”

The Lions (9-4, 4-1 in league) took a lead in the fourth quarter during a 13-1 spurt. Miller, of course, swished a game-tying 3-pointer from a spot closer to the bleachers than the 3-point line.

On the next offensive possession, LHS 6-7 senior Kobe Buffalomeat scored on a layup while being fouled for a three-point advantage. Lawrence’s student section chanted, “JIM-MY KIM-MEL” one day after his appearance on the late night comedian’s show.

It looked like the Lions were ready to run away with the game. They scored on their next two possessions — a 3-pointer from King and a layup from sophomore Brett Chapple, both assisted by senior guard Jackson Mallory. King had a team-high 15 points.

The Lions shot an impressive 11 of 23 (48 percent) from behind the 3-point line. And yet, it wasn’t enough to hold off the Raiders.

“We played good,” Miller said. “We played with a lot of heart. But it sucks, you know, losing off of that.”

But as quickly as the Lions built their lead, it unraveled with turnovers against a full-court press. The Raiders (7-7, 3-2) scored on their final five possessions. SM South shot 54 percent from the floor, including a eye-popping 10 of 15 from deep.

With LHS leading by a point and 11 seconds left, the Raiders had three attempts at inbounding the ball underneath their own hoop. The first was deflected out of play. The second was wrestled into a jump-ball. The third sent the crowd into a frenzy.

Soares caught an inbounds pass along the baseline, took one dribble and flung up a shot while his body faded out of bounds. The ball rattled around the rim and dropped in with three seconds left, sinking the Lions.

“He had to bully his way in and throw up a shot and it rolled around the rim and fell through,” Lewis said. “It wasn’t a wide open look. You just have to give him more credit for finishing.”
