LEAVENWORTH — During the fourth quarter Thursday, Lawrence High junior Brett Chapple proved he isn’t the type of player other teams want to anger.

A little upset after taking an elbow to the mouth against Leavenworth, Chapple used his aggressiveness to his advantage. Anyone who wanted to grab a loose rebound had to go through him. On offense, he posted up and punished defenders.

Scoring six straight points, Chapple lifted the Lions to a 63-57 win at Leavenworth, snapping Lawrence’s three-game losing streak.

“I think there’s a couple of plays where his fire was lit,” Lawrence coach Mike Lewis said. “Chap’s probably not the guy you want to light the fire.”

The Pioneers (1-5, 0-2 in Sunflower League) scored on their first three possessions to pull within two points at the beginning of the fourth quarter. That’s when the Lions turned to the 6-foot-5 Chapple to make a play. He promptly earned a trip to the free-throw line, drawing the fourth foul on Leavenworth’s 6-6 forward Reece Williams.

Lining up against shorter players when Williams went to the bench, Chapple made the most of mismatches. Chapple, a starting wide receiver in football, caught a pair of fastballs from his teammates under the basket for layups on the next two possessions for a 54-47 lead.

One of the only things that slowed Chapple down in the fourth quarter was a bloody lip, which forced him to the bench for about 30 seconds. He had four defensive rebounds in the final six minutes.

“I got elbowed and they didn’t call it. That just angered me even more and wanted me to play harder and talk a little bit,” said Chapple, who had a game-high 14 points and 12 rebounds. “I was just drawing fouls and getting to the rim when they had the smaller guys on me.”

Leading by only four points with under three minutes left, Lawrence (3-3, 1-1) freshman guard Zeke Mayo made back-to-back layups to keep Leavenworth at an arm’s length for the final minute. One of those layups was assisted by sophomore guard Valdez White, who was essentially making his varsity debut.

White missed the first few games because he was sick, but scored five points, including a fast-break layup with 15 seconds remaining. Lewis said he stands out in practice with the way he rebounds.

“It was exciting,” White said. “At first I was nervous, but once I started playing, I got the tempo of the game and did my part for the team.”

Before Chapple’s highlights, junior point guard Trey Quartlebaum scored eight of his 13 points in the third quarter. Quartlebaum added three steals, jumping passing lanes.

The Lions led for the entire second half after creating an 11-0 run midway through the second quarter. Mayo (11 points) started the spurt with a 3-pointer assisted by Savonni Shazor, then White added his first varsity points on a put-back layup.

Lawrence will return from winter break against Gardner-Edgerton on Jan. 5. The Lions are hopeful that last year’s leading scorer, Clarence King, will be cleared to play soon after he suffered a broken kneecap last spring.
