LHS softball struggles to score in O-East doubleheader

Lawrence High's Morgan Husman (1) swings at a pitch against Olathe East in Thursday's doubleheader at LHS.

Nearly every single Lawrence High softball player had the same animated response when walking back to the dugout.

The Lions could only shake their head in disbelief, as time and time again they were whiffed by Hayley McGhee of Olathe East. The senior pitcher tossed all 14 innings of Thursday’s doubleheader sweep, 1-0 and 7-0, over Lawrence at LHS. McGhee recorded a total of 30 strikeouts — 15 in each outing — while allowing a combined four hits.

A total of six Lawrence players were punched out more than once in the first contest, while five different players had multiple strikeouts in the nightcap. Meanwhile, only three players managed to even record a hit, all of which came in the second game.

Sophomore Kampbell Kilburn was the team’s lone player to post a multi-hit showing. She went 2-for-3, including the only extra base hit (double) logged by LHS. Seniors Annie Grammar and Rhi Emerson each notched a two-out singles, but were ultimately left stranded by an inning-ending strikeout.

The Lions (1-2) actually had a total of three runners reach scoring position in the twin bill, with a pair of them occurring in the first inning of Game Two. That’s when McGhee got a punch out with the bases loaded, spoiling the best opportunity Lawrence had to score all afternoon.

Junior Zoe Brewer did her best to counter McGhee’s domination. In the first game, Brewer allowed just one run off four hits over seven innings. The lone run came off a leadoff double, the game’s only extra-base hit, in the fifth inning by Katie Enneking. She would later come around to score on a passed ball.

After walking four batters in the first two innings alone, Brewer recovered and had better command. She finished with four walks to go along with her five strikeouts.

The Hawks then charged Brewer with seven runs (six earned) in Game Two, however. They smacked nine hits, including an inside-the-park homer run. The defense did Brewer no favors, either, by committing four fielding errors, which led to the lopsided score.
