Meriden ? Authorities investigating the year-old disappearance of a 70-year-old northeast Kansas woman are seeking the public’s help.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that Joan Rebar was last on Sept. 26, 2015, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Meriden. About 3.5 hours after Rebar was last seen, her phone transmitted its last ping, indicating it was south of Meriden. Her banking activity also ceased.

Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse describes the case as “disturbing” and “eerie.” He says that because Rebar’s disappearance was under “very questionable circumstances,” it is being investigated as a homicide.

A multi-jurisdictional task force has been involved in the search. The task force interviewed more than 100 people and searches were carried out on foot, horseback and ATV. Sonar and drone technology also was used.

Several persons of interest were looked at and cleared, Morse said. Some were administered polygraph tests. A motive hasn’t been identified. One person hasn’t been cooperative, but no definitive leads or suspects have been pinpointed.

The sheriff’s personal belief is that someone did harm to Rebar and that foul play is involved.

Morse said he does not consider the investigation a “cold case.”

“In fact, last Tuesday, the task force met in Holton. We are trying to look at this at different angles. We want to find out what happened in order to bring some answers to Rebar’s family and to bring anyone involved to justice,” Morse said.

Denison resident Stephanie Schuetz has gone on numerous searches in the past year. Even now when she is driving on dirt roads or highways, she wonders if she should take a closer look.

“It’s always in my mind,” Schuetz said. “I always hope for closure. I think about (Rebar) a lot.”
