Area roundup: Ottawa rolls past Baldwin

OTTAWA — Ottawa overmatched Baldwin from the start and never looked back, pulling off a 42-21 victory Friday.

Blaine Ray got the Cyclones on the board with an interception that he returned for 11 yards for the score. Luke Snider added to the Ottawa lead later in the first with a one-yard plunge. It was his first of two rushing touchdowns on the night.

Baldwin’s Justin Howard broke free for a 30-yard run to break the scoring drought. However, Ottawa answered with 21 consecutive points over the second and third quarter while the Bulldogs were kept out of the end zone over that stretch.

Ottawa will travel to Chanute next Friday for its third road test in four weeks. Meanwhile, Baldwin will play host to Spring Hill next week after consecutive road losses.

Eudora 54, KC Sumner 0

EUDORA — Lee Andrews and Gavin Elston accumulated 253 yards on the ground to lift Eudora to a 54-0 win over KC Summer Academy on Friday night.

Andrews toted the ball 13 times for 153 yards and a touchdown while Elston amassed 100 yards and two scores on nine carries, as the Cardinals moved to 2-1 on the season. Elston scores came from 16 yards out in the first quarter and 14 yards out in the second. Andrews broke free for a 26-yard run to go into the intermission with a 32-0 lead.

Austin Ornsby, Khalil Thrasher, and Camdon Willits each found the end zone via the ground before the final buzzer. In the end, the Cardinals scored six of their seven touchdowns on the ground with the help of five different players.

Eudora will travel to Louisburg next week.

Tonganoxie 56, Bishop Ward 0

TONGANOXIE — Mason Beach’s six total touchdowns led Tonganoxie to a convincing 56-0 win over Bishop Ward. The win improved the Chieftains to 3-0 on the season, which equals their win total from the entire 2015 season.

Beach was efficient in the passing game, completing 12 of his 14 passes for 277 yards and five touchdowns. He also made the most of his lone rushing opportunity of the night by scoring a 38-yard touchdown.

Caden Searcy was the leading receiver with two receptions for 94 yards and two touchdowns while Jordan Brown led the rushing attack with 14 carries for 139 yards and one touchdown.

The Chieftains racked up 344 yards of total offense and only conceded 18 yards of total offense to the Cyclones.

Tonganoxie will face Bonner Springs at 7 p.m. next Friday at Bonner Springs High School.

EFFINGHAM — Perry-Lecompton ran for 416 yards as a team and benefited from huge first and third quarters in a 56-0 blowout victory over Atchison County.

The Kaws began the game with a 21-point outburst in the first quarter as Cole Kellum found the end zone twice. Kellum ran the ball nine times on the night for 134 yards.

Michael Kellum later scored from 60 yards out to close out the opening quarter. Kellum’s 60-yard run was his lone rushing score but he managed to accumulate 176 yards on the ground on eight attempts.

Perry-Lecompton (2-1) will play host to Troy next week.
