KU sophomore Carlton Bragg Jr. named to Karl Malone watch list

Kansas forward Carlton Bragg Jr. puts up a three during warmups prior to tipoff, Friday, Nov. 13, 2015 at Allen Fieldhouse.

Another day another watch list for a member of the Kansas men’s basketball team’s projected starting lineup.

The Karl Malone Award on Thursday revealed that KU sophomore Carlton Bragg Jr., was one of 20 players named to the award’s watch list for the 2016-17 season.

Bragg joins KU guards Frank Mason III (Bob Cousy Award) and Devonte’ Graham (Jerry West Award) in earning preseason watch list honors.

Bragg is the only Big 12 player on this year’s Malone watch list.

Expected to slide into former Jayhawk Perry Ellis’ starting spot in the KU lineup, Bragg averaged 3.8 points and 2.5 rebounds per game during the 2015-16 season while playing in all 38 games.

Ellis was one of five finalists for the Karl Malone Power Forward Award during each of the last two seasons.

Named after Hall of Famer and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Karl Malone, the annual honor, in its third year, recognizes the top power forwards in NCAA Division I men’s college basketball. A national committee comprised of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list.

By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2017 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award will be narrowed down to 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Mr. Malone and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee. The winner of the 2017 Karl Malone Award will be honored at the ESPN College Basketball Awards in Los Angeles on April 7, 2017.
