Driver of stolen vehicle taken into police custody after crashing on I-70, fleeing

Police have apprehended a man who fled from officers on foot after crashing a reportedly stolen vehicle along I-70 near Lecompton Sunday.

The incident began around 10:20 a.m., when Kansas Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of a stolen vehicle out of North Carolina traveling westbound on I-70. A short pursuit took place before the driver of the stolen vehicle crashed into the barrier near I-70 mile marker 194, causing the vehicle, a white Subaru, to flip over.

The driver then fled the scene on foot, sending officers and a canine unit after him, according to Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Corey Davis. He was taken into police custody around 12:30 p.m. Medical units had been dispatched at that time to assess the driver’s condition.

No one else was hurt in the accident, according to the Kansas Turnpike Authority dispatch. Officers from the Lawrence Police Department and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the incident.
