Douglas County Commission to consider hiring architect for crisis intervention center

The Douglas County commission meets in the historic courtroom on the second floor of the old county courthouse, 1100 Massachusetts St.

The Douglas County Commission is set to consider the hiring of an architect for a crisis intervention center at its regular weekly meeting Wednesday.

County Administrator Craig Weinaug said Tuesday that the county was in negotiations with an architect and that a contract was expected to be presented to the commission at the meeting.

Last month, the commission unanimously approved the signing of a letter of intent to jointly move forward with plans for a crisis intervention center with Bert Nash Community Health Center. The center would provide alternative treatment options for some mentally ill individuals taken into custody.

The letter of intent affirmed talks between the county and Bert Nash, which would have the county pay to build the center on land Bert Nash owns north of Second Street, near the Douglas County Health Department.

The commission is also scheduled to elect officers for 2016. Third District Commissioner Jim Flory served as chairman the past year, and 1st District Commissioner Mike Gaughan was vice chairman.

The Douglas County Commission meets at 4 p.m. each Wednesday at the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Massachusetts St. Full meeting agendas are available online at douglascountyks.org.
