Lions use three-pointers to roll past Lee’s Summit North

Lawrence High sophomore Brett Chapple tosses a pass for sophomore Clarence King against Lee's Summit North on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016 in the Blue Valley Shootout at Blue Valley High.

? After Lee’s Summit North drained seven three-pointers in the second quarter, the Lawrence High boys basketball team had to find a way to stop the Broncos’ barrage from long distance in Tuesday’s first-round matchup of the Blue Valley Shootout.

The Lions did not completely halt the Broncos from long range in the second half, but they decided to fight fire with fire to come away with a 78-74 victory over LS North.

“Whoever is open, just throw the ball to them,” LHS sophomore Clarence King, who scored a team-high 22 points on eight-of-eight shooting, said. “If you open, just shoot it. If you miss or make it, it don’t matter. Just shoot it.”

King was joined in double figures by senior Jackson Mallory and Noah Butler, who poured in 18 and 14 points, respectively.

Lawrence (2-0) led 30-17 after a Mallory three-pointer with five minutes and change left in the second quarter, but the Broncos ended the half on a 25-9 run — fueled by three triples from Javaunte Hawkins, two from Jordan Bynum and another from Tyler Aeilts.

Mallory put it upon himself to take charge in the second half though, as he hit two of his five treys to start the third quarter for the Lions. The LHS senior helped the Lions shoot 13-of-24 from behind the arc.

“I just knew that I was a senior leader, and I had to step up and show the guys what we needed to do,” Mallory said. “We just needed to settle down and play our game, and not play theirs.”

Mallory had plenty of help from long range as well. Austin Miller and King knocked down three triples apiece, and Butler added two more. King said seeing Mallory with the hot hand helped give him and his teammates confidence.

“Once we see he (is) on, then everyone else clicks,” King said. “It’s like a team thing.”

Along with doing some damage with the three-ball, the Lions also regained momentum after the break by finding senior Kobe Buffalomeat inside. The 6-foot-7 forward scored all six of his points in the third.

“You’re not going to find many people bigger than Kobe in the Sunflower League,” said Mallory of Buffalomeat. “When he’s on and when he’s working, he’s tough. We just gotta keep feeding him. He’s a big reason why we’re going to go far this year.”

The Lions were buckle down defensively to slow down the Broncos’ three-point shooting spree in the second half. The Broncos knocked down 11-of-26 from long range, but only hit three triples in the second half. Hawkins paced the Broncos with seven threes, as he led all scorers with 23 points.

Lawrence will move on to play the host Blue Valley Tigers at 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the BV Shootout semifinals.

“They’ve got a great basketball team. I think we match up pretty well against them,” LHS coach Mike Lewis said. “They also will come out and be able to shoot it, and they’ve got a nice big forward. They’re just going to be a good, well-rounded teams so it should be a really good game.”
