Major-college prospect Mitchell Ballock, a 6-foot-4 junior combo guard from Eudora High, had successful surgery Monday to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, his mom told the Journal-World.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Douglass Stull of Lawrence’s OrthoKansas.

LaDonna Ballock reports that just one tear was found and there were “no unexpected surprises.” She indicated Mitchell — who averaged 20.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists a game his sophomore season at Eudora High en route to earning first-team all-league, all-state and Journal-World first-team all-area honors — would be able to “start some movements of the shoulder in about a month.”

There’s no official timetable set for his return to basketball-related activities, though past medical cases have shown it can take several months before an athlete’s shoulder is completely healed putting his entire junior season in doubt.

Ballock, the No. 37-ranked player in the recruiting Class of 2017 by Rivals.com, has received scholarship offers from Kansas University, Iowa State, Indiana, Kansas State, Creighton, Missouri, Northwestern, UNLV and others. He competes for KC Run GMC and has attended the prestigious invitation-only Steph Curry camp the past two summers.

St. John’s making mark: St. John’s may have helped itself in the recruitment of KU target Rawle Alkins on Tuesday by receiving a commitment from Shamorie Ponds, 6-1 senior point guard from Brooklyn’s Thomas Jefferson High who is ranked No. 42 nationally.

Alkins, a 6-4 senior shooting guard from New York now attending Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh, North Carolina, has a list of KU, St. John’s Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, North Carolina, N.C. State and UNLV. He’s ranked No. 9 in the Class of 2017.

“Congratulations to my bro on his commitment to St. John’s. Lil bro taking over the city this year,” Alkins wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.

Alkins will visit North Carolina State this weekend with KU targets Udoka Azubuike and Bam Adebayo, Zagsblog.com reports. Azubuike, a 6-11, 260-pound senior forward from Potter’s House Christian in Jacksonville, Florida, who is ranked No. 27, recently visited KU. Adebayo, 6-9, 230 senior from High Point Christian in North Carolina, is rated No. 7 overall.

Brown update: Troy Brown, a 6-6 junior shooting guard from Las Vegas Centennial High, tells Rivals.com he’d like to narrow his list of schools soon. The No. 8-rated player in the Class of 2017 has a list of KU, Arizona, California, Duke, Louisville, Ohio State, Oregon, Stanford, Utah, UCLA and others. He has visited Cal and Stanford unofficially and will visit Arizona and Utah in October.

“I will probably wait until spring of my senior year,” Brown told Eric Bossi of Rivals.com, asked about when he’ll choose a school. “That’s just from right now and talking to coaches and stuff. I feel like it’s going to be a hard decision and I want to see where other players are going and make sure I’m picking the right fit. I’m still enjoying it. I’m like a kid in the candy store and this is a really fun experience for me.”
