40 years ago: Nearly 100 bands expected for annual Band Day

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 22, 1975:

Nearly 100 high school bands from Kansas and western Missouri were expected this weekend at Kansas University’s annual Band Day. Robert Foster, director of KU bands, said 95 bands were expected for the 9 a.m. parade through downtown Lawrence and the big halftime show at the KU-Oregon State football game. The 200-member KU Marching Band was to lead the procession, followed by bands from high schools, junior highs, and the 42nd Army Band of Lawrence. Lawrence High School was to bring the largest contingent of band members to Mass Street, with about 200 participants. North Central High School, Morrowville, at the other end of the spectrum, was to be represented by about 30 student marchers. When massed on the stadium field at halftime, the bands were scheduled to play “I’m a Jayhawk,” “Across the Wide Missouri,” “Give My Regards to Broadway,” “Kansas Can and Kansas Will,” and “America the Beautiful.”
