40 years ago: Fall slow to start as Kansas ranks #1 in high temps today

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 13, 1975:

  • Temperatures had soared in Kansas over the weekend, with mercury breaking records as it climbed into the 90s across the state. Garden City, Kansas, proved to be the hottest spot in the nation with highs of 97 Saturday and Sunday. In Lawrence, residents simmered in 91-degree temperatures. The National Weather Service predicted record-high temperatures again today but said strong winds were expected to usher in a cold front soon.
  • County officials were still tallying damages and listing missing items after the Douglas County shop was burglarized and vandalized over the weekend. County Engineer Dean Sanderson said fire extinguishers had been taken from some vehicles and amber beacons atop the vehicles had been smashed. “We found pieces of them scattered in different parts of the yard,” Sanderson said. “It’s sort of a weirdo.” Police said the incident at the county shop was only one of a string of similar incidents occurring over the weekend, including break-ins at Century Homes, Jim Clark Motors, King Appliances, the office of Dr. Steven Heck, and the offices of Drs. Paul Kincaid and Phil Falkenstein.
