100 years ago: Bids opened for new Lawrence bridge construction

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 7, 1915:

  • “The bids on the construction of the proposed new bridge across the Kaw river were opened by the county commissioners today. No award of the contract for the work had been made at 3 o’clock this afternoon, and it was stated at the court house that there was small likelihood that this point would be reached today…. Much surprise was expressed by an interested audience of probably a hundred fifty town business men and former business men with a sprinkling of mechanics when it was found that there were but five bidders for the construction…. The new bridge will be built by direct taxation of the people of the county and will be paid for when it is finished. There will be no bonds maturing long afterward for the citizens of the county to consider.”
  • “Mrs. Mary Gibben, a demented inmate of the County Farm, assaulted Mrs. Jesse Pieratt, wife of the superintendent of the Farm, with a butcher knife, yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Pieratt’s nose was cut, and her chin, and a slight wound was inflicted on her neck. Mrs. Pieratt is agile and self-possessed, and Mr. Pieratt was close by at the time, and the two facts undoubtedly saved Mrs. Pieratt’s life, as Mrs. Gibben is a very large and strong woman. She was disarmed and put in the strong room at the County Farm.”
  • “Graeber Brothers have completed the big well at the foot of New York street for the paper mill. The water rises from coarse gravel, to the surface of which is fifteen feet below the river at low water stage. Two feet of coarse crushed rock was laid upon the gravel to hold it down, the vertical push being considerable.”
  • “Today is ladies’ day at the Country Club – the first was a week ago. Every Thursday afternoon hereafter the ladies will have the right of way there. They play golf, tennis, bridge, whist, and otherwise amuse themselves as they elect. A week ago there were thirty ladies present, and the promise all the week has been that that number would be exceeded today.”
  • “The first game of the World’s Series will be played tomorrow at Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Nationals and the Boston Americans will be the contestants. The Journal-World will have a full running account of the game over a special wire.”
  • “Fred Lindley was arraigned in police court this morning charged with reckless driving of a motor car, and driving at night without lights. He pleaded not guilty to the charge and his trial was set for Saturday evening at 6 o’clock.”
