Youth basketball: Lawrence Parks and Recreation is taking registration for youths in grades K-8 for the 2015 Youth Recreational Basketball program, which runs November through December. Winter clinic: The Kansas University softball program has announced its winter clinic date. Grades 1 through 5 will participate in a morning session on Dec. 12. Lawrence Trail Hawks to host 10k and 25k runs: The Lawrence Trail Hawks will host the seventh annual “Sanders’ Saunter 10k and 25k Trail Runs,” Saturday, Nov. 21, on Clinton Lake’s North Shore Trails. Sanders’ Saunter begins and ends at the Corps of Engineers trailhead on the Clinton Lake North Shore Trails, in Clinton Lake State Park. The marked courses include difficult rocky, root-bound trails; smooth, flat, easy trails, scenic lake views; long stretches through old-growth forest; and two traverses of Sanders’ Mound, for which the race is named. Sanders’ Mound is a hill overlooking Clinton Lake at the East end of the North Shore trail system. The race is a benefit for veterans’ support group Team RWB (Red, White and Blue). Thanksgiving Day Run: For 12 years they’ve been coming home to run with family and friends. Come join us for the Thanksgiving Day 5K Run/Walk on Nov. 26, 8:30 a.m. at Woodlawn School. Family fun run: The third annual TJ5K & Family Fun Run, in memory of Thomas John Giffin, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 1470 N 1000 Road (Wells Overlook Road), Lawrence. The events which begin at 9 a.m., include a 5K Trail Run, 1 Mile Run/Walk and tiny-k Kids’ Fun Run. Proceeds benefit tiny-k Early Intervention of Douglas County, a local organization, that provides developmental support and services at no cost to children birth to three years of age who need them. Powerlifting champs: 2LT Bobbi Walden, U.S. Army, formerly of Lawrence, and Joe Walden of Lawrence became the first father-daughter World Powerlifting champions in the same year. Both competed and won their weight classes this past weekend in Las Vegas at the International Powerlifting League World Championships. Bobbi competed in the 132 pound Women’s Open category on Thursday, Nov. 12, and posted a squat of 264 pounds, a bench press of 154 pounds and deadlifted 270 pounds for a total of 688 pounds. She was competing in her first World Championships. She set Oklahoma state records in all three lifts and for her total. Joe won his second consecutive World Championship. Last year he won in the 181 pound Masters 55-59 class. This year he won the 165 pound Masters 55-59 class while setting three American records and three Kansas state records in the bench press with a final lift of 270 pounds; 2 World Records in the deadlift with a final lift of 473 pounds. His squat was 407 pounds.

Vann takes post: Rebekah Vann, owner and trainer of Reign Basketball Academy LLC., and Reign Basketball Ministries Foundation (501c3) has accepted a new position as head women’s basketball coach at Kansas Christian College in Overland Park. Coach Vann has more than a decade of playing and coaching experience, competing at the AAU, high school, college (MidAmerica Nazarene) and semi-professional (KC Queenz/Columbia Reign) levels.
