Family escapes house fire in west Lawrence without injury; dog killed
A fire at a west Lawrence home Monday night has displaced the family that lives there.
Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Division Chief Eve Tolefree said crews were dispatched at 7:58 p.m. Monday to a fire at two-story reverse ranch style home at 1135 Stone Meadows Drive. They found heavy fire and smoke emitting from the garage area, she said.
All of the people who live in the house got out uninjured; however, their dog died in the fire. No firefighters were injured while extinguishing the flames.
Tolefree said the Douglas County chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the residents.
The department has not started the investigation phase as of late Monday, and the cause and estimated cost of damages will likely not be known until late morning Tuesday.
