Source: New Orleans Pelicans hire Alvin Gentry as head coach

? A person familiar with the situation says the New Orleans Pelicans have hired Golden State Warriors assistant Alvin Gentry as head coach.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on Saturday on condition of anonymity because no announcement has been made.

The person says Gentry is expected to remain with Golden State until the Warriors complete the NBA Finals against Cleveland.

Gentry has served as a head coach four times, compiling a career record of 335-370. His most successful stint came with Phoenix from 2008 to 2013. In the 2009-10 season, he coached the Suns to 54 regular-season victories and a Western Conference finals berth.

Now he inherits a squad featuring 22-year-old, two-time All-Star Anthony Davis.

Gentry, who served on the Kansas University staff of Larry Brown from 1986-88, succeeds Monty Williams, who was fired despite making the playoffs this season as the Western Conference’s eighth seed. The Pelicans were swept by the Warriors in the opening round.
