Baldwin girls 4A champs

? Baldwin High’s girls track and field team won its third consecutive 4A state title Saturday, beating out second-place Independence by 18 points.

The Bulldogs were led by throwers Alexia Stein, Kelsey Kehl and Jordan Hoffman.

The trio swept the top three spots in the discus, something they have been aiming for the past few years.

“We have been striving for this since Day 1 with going 1-2-3 in disc,” said Stein, who won both the discus and the shot put. “This was our main goal. Just having it happen is the best thing ever because I love my teammates, and we’re just like a family.”

Hoffman completed the sweep of the throwing events for Baldwin by winning the javelin.

The Bulldogs also received several strong performances on the track, highlighted by a victory in the 4×800 relay. Addie Dick, Abby Ogle, Fayth Peterson and Madeline Neufeld teamed for a total time of 10:03:03.

The Baldwin boys team ended the day on the podium as well, finishing third overall and just a point behind second-place Bishop Miege. Andale won the 4A boys team title.

The team of Joseph Pierce, George Letner, Parker Wilson and Dakota Helm made it a sweep for Baldwin in the 4×800 relay with a time of 8:16.68. Helm was in third entering his last lap as the anchor leg, but he was confident he could make up the gap.

“At regionals, we started ahead of De Soto,” Helm said. “They kind of switched their order up about three quarters of the way through the year. We’ve been racing with them being out in front of us the whole season, so we were kind of used to it. I kind of knew when to go and start pushing.”

The De Soto boys team was still able to crack the top 10 in seventh place, led by 800 runner Travis Hodge’s first-place finish. The Wildcats also had an event champion on the girls side, with Jannell Clampitt winning the pole vault.
