25 years ago: Residents, landscape architects meet to discuss proposed park

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 25, 1990:

  • Plans for a proposed park in southeast Lawrence were displayed at a meeting this week between residents and the park’s landscape architects. Residents said the park, to be built in the Chaparral Park Subdivision, should have playground equipment, a community or nature center, and adequate street lighting. “I think the plans have a real nature-type concept,” said Mark Moore of Landplan Engineering to the residents. “We wanted to find out from you what the level of activity should be.” The triangular park was to sit on about 18 acres of city-owned land east of Harper Street between 27th Street and 28th Street Terrace.
  • Tornadoes had torn through central Kansas the previous day, derailing a freight train, destroying homes, and injuring at least four people. Twisters in Wyoming, Montana, and South Dakota were also reported. A tornado had derailed 88 of 107 cars on a Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad freight train just west of Bushton, which was about 160 miles west of Topeka. None of the crew members had been injured. “We never did see a tornado,” said the train’s engineer. “It hit us out of the blue.”
