Off the Beaten Plate: Chicken gizzards at Set ‘Em Up Jack’s

When in doubt, fry it.

That’s the takeaway from this week’s Off the Beaten Plate, which took us to Set ‘Em Up Jack’s in search of chicken gizzards.

If you’ve never tried the hearty little offal, there’s not much reason to be afraid. Sure, the texture is pretty chewy — you can thank the chicken gizzard’s tough outer layer of membrane for that — but the organ itself is almost tasteless, especially when it’s breaded and fried like at Set ‘Em Up Jack’s.

Where to get it:Set ‘Em Up Jack’s, 1800 E. 23rd St.

What you’ll pay: $6.99

Try it with: Gravy (it comes on the side)

Also on the menu: Plenty of stick-to-your-ribs bar favorites, like the boneless chicken wings (we ate ours with Set ‘Em Up Jack’s “tangy” sauce) plus sandwiches, steaks, fish tacos and more. The sports bar offers a variety of specialty burgers, including the “Blackened Baja Style,” which we also sampled. It’s served with pepper jack cheese, guacamole and diced tomatoes.
