25 years ago: Local environmental firm facing penalties

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 16, 1990:

  • Hall-Kimbrell Environmental Services Inc. was facing more than $1 million in proposed penalties from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which claimed the Lawrence-based firm had improperly performed asbestos inspections and sampling work on public school property in three states. “We have filed our answers, which have been to deny all factual allegations,” said Mark Weiland, general counsel at the corporate office of PSI, of which Hall-Kimbrell was now a division. “We deny there has been any violation of anything, especially any violations of the Toxic Substances Control Act.”
  • Today’s front page was dominated by news of two celebrity deaths, both taking place this morning. Song-and-dance man Sammy Davis Jr., 64, had passed away after an eight-month fight with cancer. Jim Henson, creator of the Muppets, had also died this morning. “I never met a kinder, gentler wonderful soul in the entertainment industry or anywhere,” said Erwin Okun, a spokesman for Walt Disney Co., when speaking of Henson.
