Mother Nature has her day with rain in Lawrence; severe weather watch in place until 10 p.m.

Mother Nature had her own kind of Mother’s Day in Lawrence on Sunday with thundershowers late in the morning, and a severe weather watch has been issued by the National Weather Service in Topeka for Douglas County until 10 p.m.

A watch means conditions are favorable for severe weather development within the watch area. Severe thunderstorms could include strong winds with gusts up to 60 mph, large hail and tornadoes.

A half an inch of rain had fallen at the Lawrence Municipal Airport by 1 p.m. Sunday; the skies opened around 11 a.m.; the deluge was accompanied by lightning and thunder. Rain is expected off and on throughout the afternoon.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue, with a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 5pm. Some of the storms could be severe. Skies will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 75.

Sunday night will have more showers with a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 11 p.m. Some of the storms could be severe. Partly cloudy, with a low around 47.

Monday, however, will see a big weather turnaround, sunshine-wise: The day will be mostly sunny, with a high near 66. There will be a west wind of 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
