48 teams to compete Saturday in Sertoma’s annual barbecue cook-off

Four dozen teams will show off their barbecue prowess Saturday for the Lawrence Sertoma Club’s 17th annual state championship barbecue cook-off, club chairwoman Dee Bisel said in a news release.

Local and national teams will cook in four categories: brisket, pork, ribs and chicken, Bisel said. Prizes will be awarded to the contest’s grand champion, reserve champion and teams placing first through tenth in each category. A people’s choice winner will also be selected.

A total of $4,800 will be split among the winners, Bisel said.

In years past the contest was held at Broken Arrow Park, but due to the construction of the South Lawrence Trafficway the event will be held this year at Rock Chalk Park, 100 Rock Chalk Lane, Bisel said.

KB Smokehouse will serve the public breakfast burritos from 7 to 9 a.m. Saturday, Bisel said. The public is also invited to taste samples from the teams — while supplies last — between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Tickets are $6 per person.
