‘Stud’ Lowery lifts LHS baseball

Lawrence High junior Daonte Lowery is playing baseball on a different level than everyone else, like he’s playing chess and everyone else is playing checkers.

It’s his world, and everyone else is just living in it.

Lowery dominated at the plate, going 4-for-5 with four RBIs and finishing a home run short of the cycle. He was just as good on the mound, surrendering one run in five innings during a 10-3 victory over Leavenworth on Thursday at LHS.

His heroics are nothing new. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound left-hander also scored the game-winning run in Tuesday’s victory over Shawnee Mission Northwest, and he tossed six shutout innings in a win Saturday.

“Oh my goodness, Daonte Lowery, what a stud,” senior Nyle Anderson said. “I mean, what was he, 4-for-5 today? He’s a stud. Him on the mound, I don’t know how to explain it, it’s great for us. He finds his locations, pitches well, and his offspeed is great. He just does what he does real well.”

Lowery gave himself some run support in the first inning, hitting a leadoff double, stealing third base and scoring on a sacrifice fly by junior Brad Kincaid.

After giving up a solo home run to Leavenworth senior Nate Amos in the second inning, Lowery drilled a bases-loaded triple in the bottom half of the frame, scoring sophomore Jacob Unruh and seniors Langston Bush and Nate Hulse.

That’s all the help Lowery would need as he settled down on the mound and had strong control of his fastball.

“Two quality outings. That’s what we need,” LHS coach Brad Stoll said of his star junior pitcher. “That’s our expectations of him. He throws strikes. His pace has gotten better. He used to work a little too slow, which would drive us all crazy.”

Lowery said it was “probably” his best day at the plate in his high school career, but he’s focused on making sure the Lions can keep winning. It the first time they’ve won back-to-back games this year.

“I hope that turns our season around,” he said. “It feels really good.”

The Lions (5-10) added three runs in the third inning. They opened the inning with a leadoff double from Anderson, senior Steven Garcia drew a walk, and Unruh hit a single, which scored Anderson. Garcia later scored on a wild pitch, and Unruh was plated on a groundout.

Lowery added a single for his third hit in three innings. Needing a home run to hit for the cycle, Lowery drilled an RBI double in the fifth inning, scoring freshman Devin Lauts.

“It was fun. It really was,” Lowery said. “My teammates gave me a lot of stuff for not going around again.”

Freshman Gavin Greenwood pitched the final two innings, making his varsity debut.

“The main thing is I thought we played with confidence and played with a little attitude,” Stoll said. “We challenged them to not let Tuesday define our season. We’ve got to keep rolling. We’ve got to keep finding ways to win. It was a great effort tonight by a lot of people.”

The Lions will play host to Kansas City (Missouri) Rockhurst at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
