Theatre Lawrence announces 2015-16 season

A mermaid, a deathtrap and classic Broadway hits will be coming to the Theatre Lawrence stage, as Monday the group announced its show lineup for the 2015-2016 season that will debut in September.

The season will open with “Hands on a Hardbody,” 2012’s hit about 10 ordinary people who must keep their hands on a Nissan truck under the scorching Texas sun for as long as possible in order to win the “hardbody” vehicle in a giveaway contest.

Around the holidays, Theatre Lawrence will launch the area premiere of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” the stage musical based on the Hans Christian Andersen story about a young mermaid who longs to live above the ocean waves.

January will bring “Girls’ Weekend,” a modern farce by Karen Schaeffer that documents a getaway among female friends that goes awry when “bottles tip up, secrets spill out and men sneak in,” teases a Theatre Lawrence press release.

Next up, “Deathtrap,” a 1978 Ira Levin thriller that follows a struggling Broadway writer and his wife as they scheme to collaborate with a talented young student on a new play. “Deathtrap” offers as many laughs as it does thrills, promises Theatre Lawrence, and holds the record for the longest running comedy-thriller on Broadway.

Rounding out the schedule will be a pair of Broadway classics in “A Streetcar Named Desire,” Tennessee Williams’ 1947 Pulitzer Prize-winning play, and the celebrated musical “Guys and Dolls,” which will close out the season.

Tickets will go on sale starting May 1, and can be purchased at the Theatre Lawrence box office or by calling 843-7469. Exact dates for the 2015-16 slate of shows have not yet been announced.
