LHS baseball no-hit by Topeka Seaman

There wasn’t anything Lawrence High baseball players could do against Topeka Seaman junior pitcher Ryan Zeferjahn on Friday. Zeferjahn was locked in, and he never let up.

Zeferjahn, a 6-foot-4 right-hander who has committed to play at Kansas University, struck out 11 in six perfect innings, leading the Vikings to a 10-0 victory and a combined no-hitter to spoil the Lions’ home opener.

“That was pretty impressive. Very impressive,” LHS coach Brad Stoll said of Zeferjahn. “Hats off to him. He was filthy. He reached back and got a little something extra on the fastball when he needed it, which is a mark of a special player.”

Seaman coach Steve Bushnell considered sending Zeferjahn back out for the seventh inning for an opportunity to complete a perfect game, but when the Vikings scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning, he had an easy decision considering the cold weather and how early it is in the season.

“That’s the best I’ve seen him,” Bushnell said. “He won four games for us as a sophomore last year, and by the end of the spring season, we knew he was going to be our guy. … He’s put himself in position with the summer he’s had and the work that he’s done. He’s got a great chance to do some great things.”

LHS senior Nate Hulse was Lawrence’s only base-runner, drawing a walk against Seaman reliever Turner Middendorf with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Lions (0-3) struggled to get any good swings against Zeferjahn, sending just two balls to the outfield, and they struck out looking five times.

“I was really impressed with my first outing of the year being in this weather,” said Zeferjahn, who was throwing a mid-80s fastball and a curveball that disappeared under swings. “It was pretty good conditions for the game. My hands didn’t get numb. But I thought it was a great first outing for me.”

Lawrence senior Nick Haynes nearly matched Zeferjahn on the mound. The LHS starting pitcher gave up four hits and one earned run in four innings. Seaman senior Michael Owen hit an RBI single to left in the second inning, scoring Brad Piel, who reached on an error and slid past a relay to the plate after LHS catcher Ivan Hollins bobbled the ball.

“Obviously we didn’t swing it great for the most part but we were opportunistic with our offense,” Bushnell said. “When Ryan is on the hill, you don’t have to get a whole lot for him. So we were playing for one run innings and to have a three-run lead going into the sixth was big for us.”

In the third inning, Seaman junior David Lucero hit a leadoff single and eventually scored on a single to left-center from junior Alex Ronnebaum.

Haynes doesn’t feature the fastball or curveball that Zeferjahn has in his arsenal, but Haynes was successful in hitting the corners of the plate.

“Nick is just kind of that dude,” Stoll said. “It’s nothing that’s overpowering or nothing that’s absolutely dominant. But he throws strikes. He keeps the ball down. There’s a lot to be said for that.”

The Lions will head to Shawnee Mission West for their next game at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
