Lawrence man, woman return from Vegas to face charges in connection with triple shooting

A man and woman who were arrested in Las Vegas are back in town and now stand charged with multiple crimes in connection with February’s triple shooting on 19th Terrace.

Robert A. Long, 24, and Rachael A. Hampton, 20, both of Lawrence, were apprehended March 5 in Las Vegas after a warrant went out for their arrest. The pair were booked into the Douglas County Jail Sunday night and formally charged in Douglas County District Court on Monday.

Hampton is charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary and three counts of aggravated kidnapping.

Long is charged with the same, plus one count of criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Both appeared in court via video from jail.

Hampton’s attorneys — Olathe-based Paul Morrison, former Kansas Attorney General and Johnson County District Attorney, and Veronica Dersch — appeared in person and entered a plea of not guilty on her behalf.

Morrison declined to discuss more about the case or Hampton’s relationship with Long.

Long and Hampton are scheduled to appear in court next on March 24.

Hampton was being held on $400,000 bond, and Long was being held on $500,000, plus an additional $25,000 for an unrelated traffic case.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s office declined to release Long and Hampton’s booking photos to the Journal-World, citing a provision of the Kansas Open Records Act allowing agencies to withhold documents that could interfere with prospective law enforcement investigation or prosecution.

Three men — two of them Kansas University students — were held at gunpoint and shot during a robbery about 4:30 p.m. Feb. 8 at 1621 W. 19th Terrace.

Neither Long, Hampton nor a third suspect in the case has been directly charged with shooting the victims.

Caleb K. Chrisman, 22, of Grain Valley, Mo., was charged in February with aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary and three counts of aggravated kidnapping. He was jailed on $500,000 bond.
