Polar Plunge benefits Special Olympics

The temperate outside may have been 65 degrees, but the pool was a cool 39 degrees for the Special Olympics Kansas Polar Plunge on Saturday at Naismith Hall, 1800 Naismith Drive.

Participants in the fundraising event jumped in the pool solo or in teams, doing front flips, belly flops or simply jumping in with their nose plugged. Almost 100 people participated in the plunge, said John Pien, a Lawrence police officer also on the event committee.

Each individual had to raise at least $75 in order to participate. A lot of people donated more than that, and the event raised over $10,000 to benefit Special Olympics Kansas, Pien said.

Teams included members of Kansas University chapters of Gamma Phi Beta sorority and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, as well as the Lawrence Police Department and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical.

Naismith Hall, Sigma Phi Epsilon, WIBW-TV, 92.9 The Bull, KLWN and 105.9 Kiss FM sponsored the event.
