Large water main break floods streets in Warehouse Arts District

A large water main break flooded streets and threatened to flood at least one structure in the Warehouse Arts District on Thursday night.

After 6 p.m., nearby Poehler Lofts resident Jade Katz was walking her dog when she heard a bubbling sound and then saw the water begin to pour out of the ground, she told the Journal-World.

By 7:30 p.m., Lawrence utilities crews had successfully shut off one water valve contributing to the flooding, but more was pouring in.

Tom Larkin, a property manager for several structures in the area, said the water was about 5 inches away from entering a building at 720 E. Ninth Street.

“There’s no urgency with these people,” Larkin said, responding in frustration to the duration of the flooding.

City Distribution Systems Operator Dallas Merritt said the water was fully off around 8 p.m. and the workers could focus on repairing the break, which could take another five hours or longer, depending on the nature of the break.
