Condition unknown for Baldwin City woman who sustained ‘life-threatening’ injuries in Monday collision

The condition of a 48-year-old Baldwin City woman remains unknown Wednesday after she was taken by air ambulance in critical condition to Kansas University Hospital following a collision Monday on U.S. Highway 59.

Margaret Wessling was northbound on U.S. 59 Monday morning when 71-year-old Tommy Kay, of Lawrence, struck Wessling’s vehicle as he tried to cross east over the highway from North 1100 Road.

Both vehicles landed in the east ditch of the northbound lane of U.S. 59. Emergency responders had to extricate Wessling from her vehicle, the sheriff’s office said, stabilizing her inside an ambulance before she could be placed inside the helicopter.

Wessling sustained life-threatening injuries in the wreck, but Kay was not injured, the sheriff’s office said. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Sgt. Kristen Dymacek said.

Dymacek said Wessling was successfully taken to KU Hospital Monday, but the hospital was unable to provide a condition update Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. The hospital’s inability to release an update could mean she is no longer at the hospital or the family requested her condition not be released.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Steve Lewis said Wednesday that he did not know a condition update for Wessling, either.
