Off the Beaten Plate: Southwestern Chicken Egg Rolls at La Familia Cafe & Cantina

Off the Beaten Plate is no stranger to culinary mashups (remember Global Cafe’s Chorizo Sloppy Jose? Or the Korean BBQ Short Rib Tacos at Quinton’s?

Well, the pattern continues this week with La Familia’s Southwestern Chicken Egg Roll appetizer, which bears no resemblance (other than their log-like shape) to Chinese egg rolls.

At La Familia, the Southwestern Chicken Egg Rolls are served in a fried flour tortilla (as opposed to the familiar egg roll wrapper of Asian eateries) filled with chicken, corn, beans, bell peppers and onions. They’re creamy on the inside, crunchy on the outside and have a little kick to them, which you can level out with a bit of cheese sauce if you so choose.

What you’ll pay: $6.99

Try it with: A dunk in La Familia’s warm cheese dip that comes with the appetizers.

Also on the menu: Plenty of south-of-the-border favorites like enchiladas, chiles rellenos, steak and chicken fajitas (which we also sampled) and burritos — like the Super Sancho, a gigantic bundle of ground beef, refried beans, lettuce and tomatoes, all rolled into a flour tortilla and smothered with cheese sauce, plus sour cream, lettuce tomatoes and more cheese.
