Today in Lawrence: Welcome to Jurassic Park

Weather

If you’re tired of all the recent rain, we’ve got some bad news: There’s a chance for some showers around lunchtime today. The good news is, it’s not a strong chance, so it possibly might miss us. It would still be a good idea to prepare for it though. The rest of the day is going to be mostly cloudy but warm, starting in the 70s and working its way up to the mid-80s by this afternoon.

Belly up

This summer’s Thursday afternoon Brown Bag Concert Series kicks off at noon today with a free outdoor performance by The Beer Bellies. This week’s concert will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in front of the U.S. Bank, 900 Massachusetts St., and people are encouraged to pack a lunch (hence the “brown bag” in the name) and spend their lunch hour listening to some local music. Future concerts will be held every Thursday through July 30 either at the U.S. Bank location or at the Lawrence Public Library lawn. In case of rain (which is a possibility today) concerts will be held in the Watkins Community Museum. Check out a full schedule here.

The Downtown Lawrence Film Festival: Dinner & A Movie series kicks off June 4 with a screening of Jurassic

Dino-mite

Hold on to your butts. The Downtown Lawrence outdoor Dinner and a Movie series gets rolling tonight with a free screening of “Jurassic Park.” Thursday evenings in June and July, a different movie will be shown at Library Civic Plaza in the 700 block of Vermont Street. Starting at 7:30 p.m., families and friends can bring a chair or blanket, stake out a spot and grab some food provided by downtown food and drink vendors. There’s even free popcorn to munch on when the movie starts at 9 p.m.
