Today in Lawrence: Morning storms, a pool for tykes and a summer wine tasting

Morning storms?

There is a slight chance of thunderstorms this morning across north central Kansas, so it might be smart to pack an umbrella as you leave the house. Otherwise, dry conditions are expected for the rest of the day, with high temperatures in the upper 70s and possibly even the low 80s under partly cloudy skies. It will only cool down into the mid-60s after dark.

The South Park Wading Pool is open for the summer Monday through Saturday through Aug. 8.

South Park Wading Pool

For children looking to cool off but are too young for the Outdoor Aquatic Center, the South Park Wading Pool opened for the summer this week at the park, 1141 Massachusetts St. The pool for children ages 6 and younger features water sprays and fountains, and is free and open to the public. Hours are 1:30-7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1-6 p.m. Saturdays. It’s closed Sundays. All children must be accompanied by an adult when using the pool. More information can be found on the city’s Parks and Recreation website.

Tastes of summer

This summer on the first Tuesday of the month, The Eldridge is hosting a Summer Wine Tasting event where patrons of drinking age can come drink and learn about five wines from around the globe that pair well with the hot season. This month’s menu features wines from the U.S., France, Germany and Spain with fancy names we won’t even try to pronounce, but from their descriptions they sound good.

The tastings, which will be held inside the hotel’s TEN Restaurant, cost $15 per person, and reservations recommended by calling 785-749-1005, emailing lindsay@oliviacollection.com or RSVPing at the Hostess Stand inside The Eldridge, 701 Massachusetts St. The event begins at 6 p.m., with discounted tasting treats available until 6:30 p.m.
