40 years ago: Lawrence man takes unexpected trip down manhole

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 2, 1975:

James B. Trober, 818 Kentucky, got an unusual view of Lawrence when he stepped on an improperly fastened manhole cover in the 800 block of New York Street. The lock on the cover of the hole, which led to underground water pipes, had apparently been removed and when Trober had stepped on it, the cover had flown up and he had fallen in. A neighbor heard Trober’s shouts and helped pull him out. A city waterworks employee was contacted to fix the cover and Trober was examined and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital with some cuts and bruises.
