Today in Lawrence: Bike ride, workout and actual sunshine

Uncommon sight

When you walk outside this morning, don’t be afraid of that bright circle in the sky. It’s called the sun, and though it seems like ages since it’s made an appearance, it may be here to stay — at least for a couple days. The morning will be brisk and sunny, with temperatures around 55 degrees at 6 a.m. and warming up into the 60s by noon. The National Weather Service in Topeka’s forecast calls for a high of 73 sometime late this afternoon, with the highest cloud cover in the middle of the day. Tuesday and Wednesday will both be partly sunny, too, but thunderstorms could return late in the week.

Spirit of summer

Sunshine or not, today’s near-perfect weather is about all the incentive you need to get on your bike and ride. Hop along with the Lawrence Bike Club’s Summer Fun Beginners’ Ride, starting at 6:30 p.m. at Cycle Works, 2121 Kasold Drive.

And if cycling’s not your thing, there’s always Red Dog’s Dog Days workout at 6 p.m. at Lawrence High School, 1901 Louisiana St., to help you get in beach shape.
