Farm Fresh Challenge encourages county residents to eat local food

LiveWell Lawrence challenges residents to eat local for the month of August with the Farm Fresh Challenge.

Shoppers, eaters and cooks have their own ways to meet the challenge, and there’s even an “Adventurer” category in which participants can meet the local food challenge in their own way — host a dinner, mix the categories, create their own contest.

LiveWell Lawrence, in partnership with the Douglas County Food Policy Council, is asking county residents to meet the challenge in any of four ways:

  • Shopper: Spend $10 per week on local food.
  • Cook: Use local foods in a recipe.
  • Taster: Taste something different by trying a new local food.
  • Adventurer: Come up with your own local food adventure!

Participants can also enter to win prizes on the Farm Fresh Challenge Facebook page. The #FFChallengeSelfie contest gives participants the opportunity to submit photos featuring local food and vote for their favorites. The Eat Local Recipe Contest encourages residents to submit a delicious recipe featuring local food. Recipes will be featured on the Farm Fresh Challenge website.

The website has a calendar of events including tastings and meet-and-greet events with farmers at participating stores and a blog featuring local food stories from farmers, grocers, challenge participants and more.

The challenge will kick off during the Chef’s Challenge event on Wednesday at the Douglas County Fair, and residents can sign up during in-store events on Aug. 1. The Farm Fresh Challenge is partners with local grocery stores, including both Hy-Vee locations (Sixth Street and Clinton Parkway), Checkers, The Merc, Baldwin City Market, Gene’s Heartland Foods and Door-to-Door Organics.
