40 years ago: Owner of unusual potato visits J-W office

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 23, 1975:

  • There wasn’t another potato in town known to rival the size and shape of one brought to the Journal-World office today by Mrs. Pearl Smith, 535 Lake. The spud weighed just short of two pounds, Smith said, and far exceeded any grown in her garden in the past. According to a brief in today’s Journal-World, the potato also boasted “an unusual shape, with a knob here and there to proclaim its individuality.”
  • An inspection of the Douglas County Jail by state officials was to determine whether it was safe and sanitary enough to house prisoners, Kansas Secretary of Corrections Robert Raines said today. In an opinion issued this week, Atty. Gen. Curt Schneider said he believed Raines would have the authority to transfer inmates to other jails if he determined that any correctional facility were unsuitable. Raines said officials in his office were inspecting all county jails to determine their suitability.
