Horizon 2020 Steering Committee to discuss plan update and area needs at public drop-in sessions

Lawrence and Douglas County residents on Monday will have a chance to offer their two cents on what the area should look like in 20 years, the City of Lawrence said in a news release.

The Horizon 2020 Steering Committee is hosting two public drop-in sessions Monday evening. Horizon 2020 is the city’s and county’s long-range plan that governs everything from area development regulations to environmental issues.

First from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and second from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., residents can hear plan updates, offer their input on the committee’s past 18 months of work and make suggestions for the future. The sessions will be held in the the City Commission Room in City Hall, 6 East Sixth St.

Several areas of the comprehensive plan that need work include:

  • The creation of employment opportunities.
  • Addressing quality housing for all incomes.
  • Planning for and providing arts and cultural amenities.
  • Considering increasing height and density in appropriate locations.
  • Encouraging and supporting local food system development.
  • Creating quality neighborhoods for all ages.
  • Updating the parks and recreation master plan.

A report of the committee’s findings thus far is available online at www.lawrenceks.org/pds/comprehensive-plan-update-issue-action-report.

Those unable to attend Monday’s drop-in sessions may submit questions or comments by emailing CompPlanUpdate@lawrenceks.org or by calling the Planning Office at (785) 8320-3150.
