100 years ago: Social Service nurse announces need for children’s clothing

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 31, 1915:

  • “Miss Neiswanger, the social service nurse, announced today that she needed a supply of children’s clothes. There are a number of children in town, she says, who do not have clothes enough to keep them comfortably warm, and many are badly in need of more. Anyone who has clothes that can be used in this service may take them to the social service hall and Miss Neiswanger will see that they are delivered to the proper parties.”
  • “Scott S. Holloway, the first man in Lawrence to see the possibilities of the south end and for many years almost alone with his South Lawrence store, will be a candidate at the primaries for member of the board of education. Having been successful in managing his own business and being a man of good judgment, Mr. Holloway’s friends believe that he would make a good member of the board.”
  • “Topeka. – A bill has been presented to the attorney general’s office for his approval before it is to be introduced in the legislature that will make the cities of Kansas liable for any damages caused by the sale of liquor within the city. The bill is intended to make the cities of Kansas see to it that the liquor laws of the state are enforced within the borders of the city…. The prohibitory law is strictly enforced except in half a dozen of the cities of Kansas. In most cases it is the fault or the policy of the city officials not to enforce the law. The city gets a revenue from the fines not only of the jointists but also from the drunks and in some cities many of the people do not want the law enforced…. Representative Wells of Miami county introduced a bill today for the suppression of surplus dogs. Mr. Wells believes that every home owner should be entitled to just one dog and he would tax the life out of all the others. The bill provides for an annual license tax of $2.00 to be paid to the township assessor, but if the farmer owns two dogs he obtains a license for one at $2.00 and then the second dog is licensed on payment of $4.00 a year. The third dog will cost him $6.00, and on up, the money to be derived from the dog tax is to be paid into the township treasury and used to pay damages to sheep, fowls and other domestic animals.”
