25 years ago: Area wheat crop enjoys winter precipitation

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 20, 1990:

A system that brought heavy snowfall to southwest Kansas did not bring expected snow to Lawrence this week. A weather forecaster with the National Weather Service in Topeka said temperatures in the Lawrence area had not dipped low enough, so the city had instead received a mixed bag of rain, sleet, and cold. Several other cities in the state reported about a foot of snow with unofficial reports of up to 20 inches in some areas. Farmers were happy about the moisture and blanketing effect of the snowfall for the winter wheat. “I think it’s excellent,” said Bob Frisbee, the extension agent in Pawnee County. The winter wheat had emerged from dormancy during a recent period of warm weather, he explained, and the blanket of snow was needed to protect it from colder temperatures.
