100 years ago: Health official recommends ‘sanitary milk’ ordinance

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 19, 1915:

  • “In his report to the county commissioners for the past year, Dr. S. T. Gillispie, health officer, outlines plans for the proper control of the ‘milk question.’ He advises that the commissioners attempt to secure a city ordinance that would regulate sanitary conditions and the proper handling of milk. He states that in talking with the dairymen that they are desirous of such an ordinance as a standard to which to comply…. Dr. Gillispie suggests that every head of the house inspect the dairy that furnishes his family with milk and that every dairy, great or small, be inspected by the County Board of Health.”
  • “Preparations are being made for the construction of an Episcopal church. The organization will be known as the Second Episcopal church. They are now holding meetings at the residence of Mrs. Fishback…. The plans of the organization are to begin the church as soon as the weather will permit. It is their intention to lay the cornerstone the first Sunday in August. The organization owns lots at the corner of Nineteenth and Tennessee and will place the building there.”
  • “The next University convocation will be devoted to a musical subject and will include a song recital by a noted artist, Dr. Alma Webster Powell, who will lecture on Music as a Human Need, at Fraser hall, Thursday evening, January 21…. She declares, ‘Music is a human need, not luxury. We have regarded it too long as a sort of devotion, something apart from human life and needs, and we are suffering in consequence.’ The country needs free schools of music just as much as it needs the public schools.”
  • “The Kansas basketball team will meet the Haskell five in a practice scrimmage in Robinson gymnasium tonight. The Jayhawkers are working hard nightly in preparation for the two games with Nebraska on Friday and Saturday nights. They will be the first real home games of the season for the Kansans, and Coach Hamilton is anxious that his team make a good showing. The practice will be open to spectators tonight.”
  • “The annual firemen’s ball will be given tomorrow night at the F. A. U. hall The firemen have been busy for the past few weeks selling tickets for the ball. They are very anxious to have all possible at the big ball. They report that about 240 tickets have been sold but this amount falls short of last year’s sales and they want a record breaking crowd this year.”
  • “Owing to the threatening storm and the cold weather the city workmen who have been working on the streets did not go to work this morning. The city has employed men to sweep Massachusetts street. They worked yesterday.”
