Lions’ Clothier 4-0 at Newton

? Lawrence High junior wrestler Alan Clothier went 4-0 in the first day of the Newton Tournament of Champions to advance to the championship match of the 182-pound bracket.

Clothier won by fall against Maize’s Marcus Alternirno and Andover Central’s Matt Killion before winning by tech fall against Kaleb Jost of McPherson and Peyton Bendure of Mill Valley.

“He looked very sharp today,” LHS coach Pat Naughton said. The defending state champion will take on Norton’s Gavin Lively in the championship match tonight.

The other Lions competing were bounced in their first-round matches, but Naughton believes they can do some damage on the back side of the bracket.

“We had some tough draws in the first round,” Naughton said.

LHS will return to action for day two of the Newton tournament at 9 a.m. today.
