Kansas Humanities Council awards grants to fund veterans-related projects

The Kansas Humanities Council has awarded seventeen organizations with “The Things They Carried Home” grants totaled at $14,420, which support preservation projects and workshops related to veterans and military service.

The grants are part of Standing Together, a National Endowment for the Humanities initiative to promote understanding of the military experience and to support returning veterans.

Four organizations received Preservation Project Grants to preserve, document and create access to military artifacts and archival materials: RezVets in Leawood ($3,000), RSVP Four County in Independence ($2,988), Solomon Valley — Highway 24 — Heritage Alliance in Glasco ($2,950), and Wamego Public Library ($1,582).

Thirteen organizations, including Watkins Museum of History in Lawrence, received $300 awards. These grants will go toward hosting public community workshops, led by a preservation consultant, to help veterans and their families preserve uniforms, medals, photographs, letters, emails, correspondence and other important items that soldiers carried home.
