Off the Beaten Plate: Mochi ice cream at Encore Cafe

Mochi ice cream at Encore Cafe, 1007 Massachusetts St.

This frozen treat is like two desserts in one — soft, gelatinous mochi (a Japanese pounded rice cake, for the uninitiated) on the outside and a scoop of ice cream on the inside. At Encore Cafe, customers can choose from mango, strawberry, green tea or red bean. Each order consists of two mochi balls dusted in corn starch and drizzled with chocolate sauce.

We decided to be adventurous and try the red bean flavor, in addition to the considerably less-intimidating green tea. Perhaps a more sophisticated palette could pick up on it, but we didn’t taste much bean — just sweet, sugary ice cream.
