25 years ago: Executive director not in the plans for downtown group

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 7, 1990:

The Downtown Lawrence group had grown into a “much more cohesive organization” in recent months, but there were no plans to hire an executive director, according a member of the group’s board. Lawrence attorney Andrew Ramirez said this week that the budget for Downtown Lawrence had been cut in half since the organization had dissolved the requirement that members pay fees, but voluntary funding by organization members had been greater than the board had expected. Ramirez said the organization had no immediate plans to hire an executive director because of other priorities, including a planned study session with the city commission and a meeting with the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce to discuss ways to promote downtown. The previous year, Downtown Lawrence had had a director on staff at an annual salary of $26,000, but when its director had resigned in August and the budget had been decreased, the position had been filled at a salary of $12,000.
