Lawrence forecast: Freezing rain early Saturday, then afternoon snow

The first weekend of 2015 will bring ice and snow to much of northeast Kansas, including Lawrence and Douglas County.

The National Weather Service in Topeka issued a winter weather advisory that will be in effect from 9 p.m. Friday until 9 p.m. Saturday.

A wintry mix of rain and freezing rain is expected develop overnight, turning to snow by Saturday afternoon and continuing through Saturday evening.

Ice accumulation of around 1/10 inches is expected. Total snowfall amounts may range from 1 to 3 inches.

Roads are expected to be slick, making travel difficult.

As of 9 p.m. Friday, the temperature in Lawrence was 33 degrees, with humidity at 84 percent. Freezing rain was expected to begin by 4 a.m. Saturday and continue through 9 a.m. Then, by 4 p.m. Saturday, a second band of moisture was expected to move through Douglas County, with the heaviest snow falling between 6 p.m. and midnight.

The greatest chance for dangerous travel conditions was Saturday night through early Sunday, with a Sunday morning low of 9 degrees and a wind chill of minus-8.
