Man in custody after police chase that reached 80 mph in central Lawrence

An armed carjacking suspect led Lawrence police on a chase that reached speeds up to 80 mph in the middle of town Monday afternoon.

Police took the suspect into custody after about 10 minutes, when he suddenly stopped the red Ford Mustang convertible he was driving on Kasold Drive near Bob Billings Parkway, said Sgt. Trent McKinley, Lawrence police spokesman.

The pursuit started about 1:50 p.m. when an off-duty Lawrence police officer saw a vehicle driving erratically — speeding, squealing its tires and running a red light — near 23rd and Louisiana streets and alerted dispatchers, McKinley said.

Dispatchers broadcast a description of the vehicle, the license plate of which matched that of a car that had been stolen at gunpoint about 11:40 a.m. Monday in Topeka, McKinley said.

On-duty officers pursued the vehicle on a route that included 19th Street, Naismith Drive, Iowa Street and 31st Street, where it reached speeds of 80 mph, McKinley said.

Two police officers were injured while arresting the man, McKinley said. He described one officer’s injuries as minor and said the other officer was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and was expected to be released Monday afternoon.

McKinley said the suspect was booked into jail on multiple charges. Lawrence police were working with Topeka police on their carjacking investigation, he said.
