KU project explores black writers with Kansas ties

In observance of Black History Month, Kansas University Libraries in conjunction with KU’s Project on the History of Black Writing will host a program that explores black writers with roots in the Sunflower State.

The program, called Black Literary Suite: Black Writers with a Kansas Connection, will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Watson Library, 1425 Jayhawk Blvd. A poster display and self-guided audio tour about the writers will be set up throughout the library, according to a KU news release. The posters will remain in place through March.

Maryemma Graham, a professor of English at KU and founder and director of the university’s Project on the History of Black Writing, said the program is meant to shine a light on both familiar and less-known writers with Kansas ties. The event is also meant to share new information about authors and ties to Kansas that aren’t widely known.
