40 years ago: Wintertime DST reinstated this week

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 22, 1975:

Most of the nation advanced to Daylight Saving Time this week. The practice of moving clocks ahead one hour had been used sporadically in the United States from World War I until 1969, when DST had been adopted nationwide, with the states reserving the right to exempt themselves. In 1973, Congress had put most of the nation on DST for two full years as an energy conservation measure. Citizens and legislators had objected angrily to the move, and DST had been revoked in October 1974. It was reinstated this week, instead of the usual last Sunday in April, in response to energy conservation concerns.
