40 years ago: President Ford hires woman for Cabinet post

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 12, 1975:

President Ford this week announced his plans to nominate Carla Anderson Hills to be Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, making her only the third female Cabinet member in White House history. The previous two had been Frances Perkins, Secretary of Labor in 1933, and Oveta Culp Hobby, Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare in 1953.
