Veritas team takes top in-state spot in cybersecurity competition

A team from Lawrence’s Veritas Christian School finished first among Kansas schools and 22nd nationwide at a cybersecurity competition.

The National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, held from Jan. 16-18, challenges school teams across the United States and Canada to find and resolve cybersecurity vulnerabilities in simulated environments.

Three Veritas eighth-graders outscored 196 in-state teams in the middle school division. In all, 2,175 teams registered to compete. The competition was held online.

The Veritas team consists of Declan Oberzan, Cale Griffin and Micah Denham. It is coached by Kristen Oberzan. Kelley Denham, Don Griffin and Rob Marett serve as parent technical advisors.

The competition was created by the CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Education Program, which educates students on careers in cybersecurity and other technology and engineering disciplines.
